Road Trip to the National Corvette Museum
BOWLING GREEN AND BEYOND
A report on the NCM Road Trip in June
We (John and Barb Lamb, Mary and Kent Kittle, Walt and Jill Davis, Joe Jacobs, Mike and Ruth Flores, Van and Lynn Knox and Roland and Janis Ballow) planned our trip to Bowling Green for several months, gathering information and brochures and discussing what all of our wishes would include.
We began our journey at the Cracker Barrel in Conroe. But, our beginning was not uneventful. John discovered that one tail light had burned out and they had to make an emergency run to Walmart for a replacement bulb. Once that was fixed we were set for a great ride, or were we?
Van Knox led the first leg of our trip to Forrest City, Arkansas. The heat rode with us. Several hours into the ride, John and Barb’s engine light came on. OnStar diagnostics found either a bad fuel mixture or a bad fuel injector. The car seemed to have power so they continued onward. We found a great motel, The Hampton, checked in and agreed to meet in the lobby and head to dinner. Some of the guys headed down the hill to the next motel for a quick beer. It must have been some beer!! - they went back to the wrong motel!! However, they quickly found us again and we were off to dinner. The desk clerk tipped us off to a fine restaurant and the food and service was great.
Sunday we started off to Bowling Green. As luck would have it, John and Barb landed a quarter sized rock chip in the middle of their windshield not far into our day. Fortunately the engine light was now gone again. Roland and Mike swung by the Nashville airport to pick up Janis and Ruth. And we kept onto Bowling Green and thunderstorms, we weathered the storms in a rest area and arrived safely at our motel about 3:00.
Unfortunately, the cave tour was called off due to high water. Most of the group made a quick trip to the museum before dinner. Once again a good tip from the desk clerk and another great place to eat in historic downtown Bowling Green.
Monday morning we headed out to the Corvette factory for an early tour.
It was exciting to see dreams coming together while we watched. The museum was next on the schedule. We found the club display, flag and brick. There was some heavy duty shopping going on in the gift shop and then lunch at the café. Art’s Corvette shop held some rare beauties.
The cave was open for tours on Monday, so we headed off to the deep, dank recesses of the Lost River Cave. It was a great relief to spend a half an hour in the 55 degree temps.
Tuesday we headed for Pigeon Forge and the Tail of the Dragon. The group had a blast on the dragon, while John and Barb investigated Pigeon Forge.
We headed out early Wednesday for Asheville, riding the “Tail of the Lizard” through the mountains. Nice winding, rolling curves.
Wednesday was spent at the Biltmore in Asheville, NC. Awesome!! We toured the house, the gardens, the winery and the stables (which was converted into a eatery). What a lot of walking. Mary, Kent, John and Barb then headed off to the horses or a trail ride. Unfortunately, our ride was cut short by thunderstorms. Yes! Some parts of the country do have rain.
Thursday found us headed for Bryson City, NC and the Smokey Mountain Train ride. Beautiful scenery and comfortable ride into the Nantahala Gorge.
After the ride, Janis and Roland headed off for the airport and Janis flew back home. We were all sorry to see her leave. The remainder of the group explored the shops of Bryson City.
Friday, the trip was at its end, and we all headed for New Orleans. Walt, Jill, Mary and Kent left us for the casinos. The rest of us headed for home.
Good times and memories were had by all!
